On Saturday Pink pledged to donate $500,000 to local fire services that are battling brushfires in Australia.
Since last September hundreds of bush fires have devastated the continent. CNN reported that as of Sunday, there were approximately 136 fires, about half of which are out of control. About 2,700 firefighters are battling the blazes; three have been killed. Authorities report that overall 24 people have died in the fires, and two people are missing. In December the air quality in Sydney measured 11 times the "hazardous" level. One ecologist estimated that about 480 million animals have been killed in New South Wales.
Pink tweeted, "I am totally devastated watching what is happening in Australia right now with the horrific bushfires. I am pledging a donation of $500,000 directly to the local fire services that are battling so hard on the frontlines. My heart goes out to our friends and family in Oz."
Pink (née Alecia Moore) has sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Four of her songs have reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. She has won numerous music awards, was named Billboard's Woman of the Year in 2013, and received the BMI President's Award in 2015 "for her outstanding achievement in songwriting and global impact on pop culture and the entertainment industry". Last month she was named Pollstar's Artist of the Year for 2019 following the success of her $215 million worldwide Beautiful Trauma tour.
The recording superstar previously donated $500,000 to the Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. She was honored with the 2019 People's Champion Award at the E! People's Choice Awards "for her support of and work with No Kid Hungry, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Planned Parenthood, REVERB, Autism Speaks, and Human Rights Campaign, and as a UNICEF ambassador".
Last spring circumcision opponents and other social media users went ballistic after the 39 year-old mother posted a photo of her children feeding a pelican. Her 2 year-old son had removed his diaper, and his penis was visible in the photo she posted for her 7.4 million Instagram followers.
While intactivists were quick to condemn the singer for protecting her son from urinary tract infections, their reaction to her generous donation is one of apathy. We haven't seen any public statements from them about Pink this week. Nor has the intactivist movement raised even one dollar to help those affected by the devastating fires.
